Salesforce is the enterprise CRM. It's also $100–300/user/month for anything beyond basic contact lists, requires a certified admin (or an expensive consultant) to make it do what you want, and holds your data hostage behind an export system that seems intentionally painful. If you're reading this, you probably already know all that. You're looking for what comes next.

Good news: the open source CRM space in 2026 is genuinely viable. Not "viable with an asterisk" or "viable if you don't need X." Actually viable for most teams under 500 people, and increasingly for larger ones.

Bad news: there's no single drop-in replacement. Salesforce does a hundred things, and no open source tool does all of them. But you probably don't use a hundred things. You use ten. The right question isn't "what replaces Salesforce?" It's "what replaces my Salesforce?"

Why people actually leave

The pricing conversation is obvious, so let's skip past "it's expensive" and talk about the subtler reasons people leave.

The admin bottleneck. In most Salesforce orgs, there's one person (or one team) who understands the config. Every field change, every workflow modification, every report tweak goes through them. The data gravity trap. The more you build in Salesforce, the harder it is to leave. This isn't accidental. Every integration, every custom report, every automation increases your switching cost. By year five, most orgs feel locked in — not because Salesforce is the best tool, but because the cost of leaving exceeds the cost of staying.

The UI tax. Salesforce's interface is functional but exhausting. It's optimized for "can do everything" rather than "feels good to use daily." Sales reps who live in the tool eight hours a day feel the weight of this. CRM adoption problems — where reps stop logging activities — are often a symptom of UI friction, not laziness.

The realistic options

Here's what actually exists in 2026. I'm going to be blunt about strengths and weaknesses because you can read marketing copy elsewhere.

Twenty — the new standard-bearer

Twenty is the project that's generating the most excitement right now. Built by a YC-backed full-time team (founded 2023), TypeScript/React, GraphQL API, and a UI that feels like it was designed by someone who's actually used a CRM before. Think "Linear for sales" — clean, fast, keyboard-friendly.

What's real: contacts, companies, deals, pipeline views (table and kanban), custom fields, workflow automation, email sync, API. The data model is flexible — you can add custom objects with relationships, not just custom fields.

What's not ready yet: if you need territory management, CPQ (configure-price-quote), advanced forecasting, or a massive integration marketplace, Twenty isn't there yet. It's also young — about two years old with rapid iteration. That means some features land half-baked before getting polished in subsequent releases.

Best for: teams of 5–50 who want a modern CRM experience, can run Docker, and value UX over feature checklist depth. If your sales process is "track deals through stages, log activities, don't lose context," Twenty does this better than Salesforce at a fraction of the complexity.

SuiteCRM — the enterprise workhorse

SuiteCRM is the OG open source Salesforce alternative. Forked from SugarCRM in 2013 when Sugar went proprietary, it's been accumulating enterprise features for over a decade. Workflows, campaigns, quotes, reporting, role-based access, territory management — it's all there.

The tradeoff is obvious the moment you log in: the UI looks like 2015. The underlying code is PHP with a LAMP stack architecture that feels heavy by 2026 standards. SuiteCRM 8 (the rewrite) has been modernizing things, but it's a gradual process.

Best for: teams that need the full enterprise feature set and have technical staff to manage the deployment. If you're migrating from Salesforce and need feature parity on paper, SuiteCRM is the shortest path. Expect a learning curve for admins, but the concepts map directly from Salesforce.

EspoCRM — the balanced middle

EspoCRM is what happens when someone looks at SuiteCRM and says "this should be lighter and faster." Modern PHP backend, clean responsive UI, snappy performance even on modest hardware. Runs comfortably on a $5/month VPS.

It covers the CRM fundamentals well: leads, contacts, accounts, opportunities, email integration, workflow automation, reporting. The admin panel is intuitive enough that non-developers can customize layouts, add fields, and build basic automations.

The weakness: the extension ecosystem is smaller than SuiteCRM's, and some advanced modules (VoIP integration, advanced reporting) require paid extensions. The community is active but not massive.

Best for: small-to-mid teams (5–100) who want a traditional CRM that works without constant admin attention. Especially good if you value snappy UI and easy Docker deployment over bleeding-edge features.

Odoo CRM — the everything platform

Odoo is an ERP that happens to include a CRM, not a CRM that grew into an ERP. The Community edition is LGPL-licensed and genuinely free. It gives you pipeline management, lead scoring, email integration, and activity scheduling.

The catch: the moment you want email marketing, studio customizer, or most of the modules that make Odoo compelling (invoicing, inventory, HR), you're on Enterprise at $20–25/user/month. The "open source" label applies to the Community edition, but the product is clearly designed to funnel you toward Enterprise.

If you're okay with that model and your needs extend beyond CRM into accounting, project management, inventory, or HR, Odoo is remarkably complete. Running everything in one integrated system is genuinely simpler than stitching together five tools with Zapier.

Best for: businesses that need CRM + other operational tools and want one platform instead of many. Particularly strong for companies with physical products (inventory tracking) or service businesses (timesheets, project billing).

ERPNext — the manufacturing-first ERP with CRM

ERPNext is fully GPL-licensed (no Enterprise trap) and genuinely free. It covers CRM, accounting, HR, manufacturing, and project management. The CRM module handles leads, opportunities, quotations, and customer communication.

The honest truth: ERPNext was built for manufacturing and distribution. The CRM module works, but it's not where the project's heart is. If your primary need is CRM and you don't need the other modules, ERPNext will feel overbuilt. The Frappe framework underneath is powerful but has a learning curve for self-hosting.

Best for: manufacturing, distribution, or multi-department companies that want an all-in-one system where CRM is one module among many. Not ideal if CRM is your primary need.

CiviCRM — the nonprofit specialist

CiviCRM is designed specifically for nonprofits, advocacy organizations, and civic groups. It handles donor management, membership tracking, event registration, fundraising campaigns, grant tracking, and mass communications.

This is not a B2B sales CRM. If you're tracking deals through a pipeline, CiviCRM is the wrong tool. But if you're a nonprofit currently paying for Salesforce's Nonprofit Cloud (which starts at $60/user/month), CiviCRM is a serious option. It integrates with WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla, and has been serving the nonprofit space since 2005.

Best for: nonprofits and membership organizations migrating from Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud. If your "sales process" is actually donor cultivation and event management, CiviCRM speaks your language natively.

How to pick

Here's the decision tree that actually matters:

"I want the best UX for my sales team" → Twenty. Nothing else in the open source CRM space touches it for daily usability in 2026.

"I need feature parity with Salesforce Enterprise" → SuiteCRM. The UI isn't pretty, but the features are there.

"I want something simple that just works" → EspoCRM. Docker compose up, configure through the UI, done.

"I need CRM plus accounting plus inventory" → Odoo (if okay with the Community/Enterprise split) or ERPNext (if you want fully open source).

"I'm a nonprofit" → CiviCRM. No contest.

"I have a team of 3 and just need to track contacts and deals" → EspoCRM or Twenty. Both are overkill for this, in the best way.

The migration itself

Whatever you pick, here's what I've seen work:

  1. Export everything first. Before you touch settings, get a full Salesforce export. Data Loader or Dataloader.io for structured data, then document your automation rules manually. Salesforce's export gives you CSVs but doesn't export your workflow logic.
  1. Start with contacts, then layer features. Import your contacts and accounts. Get the team using the new tool for basic logging. Only then add automation, reporting, and integrations. Teams that try to recreate their entire Salesforce config before going live never actually go live.
  1. Run parallel for 30 days. Yes, it's annoying. Yes, reps will complain about double-entry. But it's the only way to catch data gaps before they matter. Make the parallel period finite and visible — put an end date on the calendar.
  1. Accept the feature gap. You will lose things. Some Salesforce feature you used occasionally won't exist in the new tool. That's okay. The question is whether what you gain (lower cost, data ownership, simpler system) outweighs what you lose. For most teams, it does.

Bottom line

Salesforce is a fine product that costs too much, does too much, and locks you in too hard. The open source alternatives in 2026 aren't toys — they're genuine replacements for 80% of what most teams actually use Salesforce for.

The 20% that's still hard: deep AppExchange integrations, enterprise-grade forecasting, CPQ, massive multi-org rollups. If those are core to your operation, you might still need Salesforce (or a commercial alternative like HubSpot or Pipedrive).

For everyone else: pick one, import your contacts, give it 60 days. The worst case is you learn what you actually need from a CRM. The best case is you save $50k/year and get your data back.
